Sophia Mergiali-Sahas is a graduate of the School of Philosophy of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki in Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies. She received a master’s and a Ph.D. degree in History from the University of Paris-I (Sorbonne). Her research experience is with the Lexicon of Mediaeval Language (1100-1669) by E. Kriaras; the Institut National des Langues et Ciνilisations Orientales; the Institute of Mediterranean Studies; and the Dumbarton Oaks Center for Byzantine Studies, Harvard University.
She teaches at Athens since 2012. She has also taught at the Universities of Crete, Patras, Thessaloniki, and Corfu. She has been a member of the Byzantine Studies Conference (USA and Canada) and the Canadian Committee of Byzantinists. She is a member of academic societies such as the Greek Historical Society, the Greek Committee of Byzantine Studies, and the Research Society of the Relations of Medieval and Modern Hellenism with the West. She has participated in scholarly conferences and given lectures in academic fora in Greece, Italy, the USA, and Canada. She is the author of :
• l’enseignement et les lettrés pendant l’ époque des Paléologues 1261-1453 (1996)
• Writing History with the Saints (in Greek, 2014)
• Byzantium in “the theatre of the World” the Late Middle Ages, in its last pages of completion, accepted for publication; some 25 articles in Greek and international journals.
Her research interests focus on Late Byzantine period themes such as education, institutions of learning, intellectuals, diplomacy, social divergence/deviation, saints in Byzantine society, piracy and slave trade, and international relations.
