Georgios Pallis is Associate Professor of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Archaeology and Art at the Department of History and Archaeology of the School of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He holds a B.A. in History and Archaeology (specialization in Archaeology and History of Art), an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Byzantine Archaeology from the same University. Prior to his election to the Department, he worked from 2006 to 2013 at the Archaeological Service (24th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities), to which he was admitted by examination.
His scientific work focuses on marble sculpture and epigraphy of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods, while he also researches issues of monumental topography, the history of Byzantine archaeology and the history of Ottoman monuments in Greece. From 2004 to 2012 he participated in the university excavation of the Venetian Epano Kastro of Andros and since 2015 he has been collaborating in the university excavation of the Agora of ancient Andros (Palaiopolis) on the same island.
His recent publications include the monograph From Lamia to Zitouni: Recomposing a small Byzantine city (Gutenberg, Athens 2020) and the articles "The House of Inscriptions: the Epigraphic World of the Middle Byzantine Church" (M. D. Lauxtermann - I. Toth (eds), Inscribing Texts in Byzantium: Continuities and Transformations. Papers from the Forty-Ninth Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies, London and New York 2020, 147-161), "Byzantine figurative reliefs from Andros" (ΑρχαιολογικήΕφημερίς 161 (2022) 67-84) and "Palaeologan relief of Christ Emmanuel from the collection of the Library of Hadrian in Athens" (ΔελτίοντηςΧριστιανικήςΑρχαιολογικήςΕταιρείας MΓ΄ (2022) 371-380); recently co-edited the volume Ottoman monuments in Greece. Heritage under negotiation (Capon - École française d'Athènes, Athens 2023).
Georgios Pallis is general secretary of the Christian Archaeological Society (founded in 1884) and member of the editorial committee of its Deltion. He is also an active member of the Hellenic Epigraphic Society, the Hellenic Committee for Byzantine Studies and the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies, and participates in the Special Synodal Committee on Christian Monuments of the Church of Greece.
