KATERINA NIKOLAOU

Katerina Nikolaou received her B.A. in history and archaeology and her Ph.D. in Byzantine history from the department of history and Archaeology of the University of Athens.

She worked as a professor of philology at the American College of Greece and from 1988 to April 2008 as a researcher at the Institute (Centre) of Byzantine Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, where she was promoted to the rank of Senior Researcher (B). Today she is a professor of Byzantine History, specializing in the early and middle Byzantine period.

Her research interests focus on the social and practical life of the Byzantines, with particular emphasis on the place and role of women in society, on hagiology (6th-11th centuries) and epigraphy [in 2016 she was selected as a member of the Commission d'épigraphie (Inscriptiones Graecae Aevi Byzantini) of the International Commission for Byzantine Studies (AIEB) -and remains so to date]. He has also been involved in digital technologies in Byzantine studies since 1985.
